Ranil to step down as UNP leader after long innings
Ravi, Vajira, Daya, Akila, Navin in the running

Ranil Wickremesinghe had decided to step down as leader of the UNP, General Secretary of the party Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said yesterday.
Kariyawasam said that the UNP Working Committee would meet tomorrow to elect a new leader and discuss revamping the party following its shocking performance at last weeks General Election.
Wickremesinghe has been at the helm of the UNP for 26 years.
Ravi Karunanayake, Vajira Abeywardena, Daya Gamage and he had already been proposed as candidates for the party leadership, Kariyawasam revealed, adding that members were free to propose any other candidates if they so wished. Navin Dissanayake’s name has also been mentioned and it was likely to be proposed tomorrow, party sources said.
