Ranil doesn’t regret postponing local polls

Admits it was a violation of citizens’ rights
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, on Thursday (22) admitted that postponing the Local Government elections was a violation of citizens’ basic rights.
Addressing the National Conference of the New People’s Front (NPF) at the Youth Service Council Auditorium, Maharagama, Wickremesinghe said that he did not regret the decision that violated people’s fundamental rights as 2023 was dedicated to ensuring the people’s right to life and safety.
The President added his mission was to stabilise the country’s economy.
If the Local Government elections had been conducted in 2023, achieving economic stability would not have been possible, Wickremesinghe said.
President Wickremesinghe mentioned that over the past two years, he had been dedicated to safeguarding the basic rights of the people and stated that he would continue to make necessary decisions to protect their rights in the future.
President Wickremesinghe said he had decided to hold the general election after the upcoming presidential election.
“Necessary funds have already been allocated. Following the General Election, Provincial Council Elections will be held, followed by Local Government elections,” he said.
The President reiterated that he had no regrets about postponing elections. “We have collectively decided to hold the General Election after the Presidential Election, and the necessary funds for this have been secured.
The Provincial Council elections are planned to follow. We acknowledge the importance of these elections and are currently securing the funds needed. Local Government elections will be scheduled subsequently, with new laws to be introduced, including measures for youth representation.”
