Prof Senake Bandaranayake commemoration at Kelaniya Uni today
Arrangements have been made to conduct the seventh commemoration of eminent archaeologist Professor emeritus Senake Bandaranayake today (08) at 9.00 a.m. at the auditorium of Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Kelaniya.
Prof Jagath Weerasinghe, former Director of Postgraduate Institute of Archaeological Research (PGIAR), Colombo, and Dayananda Amarasekara, former professor in the Department of Archaeology of the University of Kelaniya will grace the event organised by M.M. Gunathilake, incumbent Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Kelaniya.
Prof. Bandaranayake graduated from the Bristol University, UK, and later obtained his PhD from the University of Oxford. Subsequently, he obtained a post graduate degree from the Institute of Archaeology, University of London. He served as a faculty member at the University of Kelaniya from 1975 and was Head of the Department of Archaeology from 1993-1995.
Prof Bandaranayake served as Vice Chancellor of the same University, from 1996 to 1999. He was also the founder director of the PGIAR.
Prof Bandaranayake served as Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India and the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to France.
He was born in 1938, and educated at S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.
