Prof. Jennifer Perera appointed Registrar of Ceylon Medical College Council
Prof. Jennifer Perera has been appointed the Registrar of the Ceylon Medical College Council. The letter of appointment was presented to her by Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, at the Ministry of Health and Mass Media recently.
This appointment has been made in accordance with the provisions of the Medical Ordinance.
Professor Jennifer Perera has rendered over four decades of dedicated service to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Colombo. From 2015 to 2020, she served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, and has also served as an active member of the Sri Lanka Medical Council. She obtained her Doctorate in Medical Microbiology in 1986 and was appointed as a Professor in 2001. Her research, which focuses on the use of modern molecular biological techniques to identify infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, has been widely recognised. Professor Perera’s work has earned her several Presidential Awards and commendations from the National Science Foundation.
In 1996, Professor Perera played a pioneering role in restructuring the medical science curriculum and has contributed significantly to reforms in medical education. She has also provided her expertise to a number of national committees, including the National Biotechnology Steering Committee of the National Science Foundation, the Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health, and the National Committee on Women.
Professor Perera is a member of both the Sri Lanka Association for Microbiologists and the National Science Foundation. She is also an active member of the Sri Lanka Medical Association and served as its President in 2015.
She holds MBBS and MD degrees from the University of Colombo, a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from the University of Dundee, a Postgraduate Diploma in Women’s Studies from the University of Colombo, and an MBA from the University of Wales.
Professor Perera is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Colombo. She also serves as an external professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Wayamba University, and as a senior advisor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Moratuwa.

INS NIREEKSHAK makes port call in Colombo
The Indian Navy Ship (INS) NIREEKSHAK arrived in Sri Lanka for Operational Turnaround (OTR) and a training visit on 21 Apr 26.
The Sri Lanka Navy welcomed the visiting ship at the port of Colombo in accordance with time-honoured naval traditions.
Commanded by, Commander Sailesh Kumar Tyagi, this Diving Support Vessel is set to conduct a training programme with the diving professionals of the Sri Lanka Navy.
The crew is also scheduled to participate in several activities organized by the Sri Lanka Navy and visit some tourist attractions within the country.

Issued at 12.00 noon 21 April 2026 valid for the period until 11.30 p.m. 21 April 2026
Thundershowers accompanied with severe lightning are likely to occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, Northcentral, Southern, Uva provinces, and in Mannar, Vavuniya, Ampara, Batticaloa districts after 1.00 p.m.
There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers. General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
ACTION REQUIRED:
The Department of Meteorology advises that people should:
Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.
Beware of fallen trees and power lines.

Six Foreign Envoys Present Credentials to President Dissanayake
Two High Commissioners, three Ambassadors and an Apostolic Nuncio-designate of the Holy See presented their credentials to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (20).
The ceremony, held at 10.00 a.m., followed the formal order of precedence, with the envoys representing Papua New Guinea, Somalia, Luxembourg, the Holy See, Pakistan and Kuwait.

Following the presentation of credentials, the President engaged in a cordial discussion with them. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, and the Secretary to the President, Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, were also in attendance.
