President pledges to build an economy capable of settling the country’s debts

President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday (14) stressed that he will definitely work towards resurrecting the country from bankruptcy and  that he will build an economy that is free from debt and create a stable economy that is able to pay its debts,

He said that, today the country has become bankrupt due to the failure to change the economic program after the war and that he expects to increase the investment opportunities and move the economy forward by next year.

The president emphasized the need for an institutional system that can revive the country’s economy and bring investment opportunities to the country and that steps will be taken to create an economic corporation by merging the Investment Promotion Division of the Sri Lanka Board of Investment and the Export Development Board.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Buddhism, Religious, and Cultural Affairs to provide tax relief on imported dates received as donations or gift for Ramadan.

This year’s Ramadan fasting season is scheduled to begin on 19-02-2026 and end on 21-03-2026.
