Power of Parliament subjugated to IMF dictates – JVP

JVP-led NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday said that Sri Lanka had lost its financial sovereignty to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which, he said, was overriding Parliament’s power over taxation and fiscal policies.

Addressing a seminar organised by JVP’s Bhikkhu wing the National Bhikkhu Front, at the Foundation Institute in Colombo, Dissanayake said that by subjugating powers of Parliament to the IMF, Sri Lanka had now reverted to the situation it found itself under the British colonial rule.

He said when the Opposition requested a two-day debate on the Central Bank Amendment Bill, the government had said it was not possible and that if the debate went for two days, it would affect the timeframe set by the IMF.
