Public Health Inspectors have commenced inspections of eateries, hotels, and restaurants to ensure that food handlers are vaccinated against typhoid.

Chamil Muthukuda, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors’ Association, said the PHIs would examine the employees of boutiques, food production institutions, food storage facilities, hotels, restaurants and drivers and workers of food transport vehicles to check whether they are vaccinated.

Muthukuda emphasised that according to the law, all employees of food production establishments across the country must receive the typhoid vaccination.

Muthukuda also mentioned that the typhoid vaccine could be obtained free from regional MOH (Medical Officer of Health) offices across the country.

He said that it was the responsibility of the owners and managers of the respective institutions involved in food production, transport, distribution, storage, and sale to ensure their staff members had received the vaccine.
