W. E Indrapala Boteju is an antiques collector and seller from Panadura. When I met up with him he related his fascinating story of antiques and why he began collecting them A mason by profession, Indrapala soon discovered by the beauty of antiques which are rich in history and culture. His antique collection is located at his home in Panadura. For more than three decades his home has continuously filled with magnificent antique furniture from ebony tables to satinwood almirahs and many other collector’s items spanning over many eras and locations.

Q Tell us about your journey into the Antique industry when did you realise that you could turn your love for antiques into a career?

A I started my career as a mason bass at a very early age under the supervision of D. Gamage Danny. He taught me the finer points in furniture making. As time went on I started buying and collecting antiques.

(Q) What makes your antique collection different from others?

(A) I have an antique collection dating from very early times chairs, tables, cupboards. I always explore the growing trend of vintage and antique furniture, and how it is influencing modern designs . Most of my customers come from every nook and corner of the country.

(Q) Do you see a trend in antique furniture in modern homes.

(A) Many buyers are looking for furniture that is one of a kind and has a rich history. My collections are rich in history and character, making it a popular choice for those looking to add a touch of uniqueness to their home. The demand is more for hand made antiques with intricate details and superior craftsmanship compared to mass produced pieces.

Q What is your main motivation for collecting antiques.Is it for money or pleasure.

A I am not driven by any specific reason. It was a passion at the beginning now it has turned into a business.

Q Is there a piece in your collection you have a strong attachment to?

Of course yes some of my antique furniture has a long history of the past and present.

(Q) What is the unique appeal of antiques to you?

(A) For me its the combination of history and great design. I deal with many pieces which has a interesting history some of them have played an important part in historical events. I try to provide information to the buyers all the details of the history of the product.

(Q) How can antiques blend well in traditional and contemporary settings?

(A) Antiques pieces look great in any home and can bring character and warmth to the modern home. Sometimes it’s all about having confidence to put the objects together and make them part of your story.

Q Where do you collect your antiques from.

A I travel far and wide, sometimes I am away from my home for days and months to explore places to find authentic antique furniture.

Q What about reproduction of antiques?

A yes there are modern reproductions. Replicas are produced now for quick sales.

(Q) Are antiques furniture currently in demand?

(A) Yes. Many traders are still popular. Antique business is an evolving trade like everything. It’s much more fast paced now with social media and digital marketing taking over.

(Q) What is the unique appeal of antiques?

(A) For me, it is the individuality of the products.

(Q) What makes the antiques trade so interesting/exciting for you?

(A) Quite literally you never know what you are going to see? Every day is a new adventure. I learn something new everyday. It has given me a unique experience.
