Oppenheimer sweeps awards with best picture and actor wins at Oscars 2024

Oppenheimer is the big winner of the 96th Oscars after scooping seven awards including best picture and best actor for Cillian Murphy.  The film, which had 13 nominations, also won the  best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr, as well as best director for Christopher Nolan, plus film editing, cinematography and original score

Emma Stone was awarded best actress for her role in Poor things, which also won best production design, make-up and costume design

The best supporting actress award went to The Holdovers’ star Da’Vine Joy Randolph

Barbie – last year’s highest grossing film – received just one award for best original song written by Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas. The pair performed live, as did actor Ryan Gosling

Anatomy of a Fall won best original screenplay, while American Fiction scooped the adapted screenplay gong

It’s a historic night for some, as Ukraine won its first ever Oscar with best documentary 20 Days in Mariupol, and the UK won the best international film for The Zone of Interest

Trump says he is postponing strikes on Iran power plants after ‘productive’ talks on ending war

Donald Trump says the US and Iran have held talks on the “complete and total resolution of hostilities”  in the Middle East

He says that, as a result of the talks, he has postponed threatened strikes on Iranian power plants and oil and  gas fall immediately after.

On Saturday night, Trump had given Iran a 48 hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. – or, he said, the US would “obliterate” Iranian power plants

An Iranian news agency quotes an unnamed source saying there have been no talks between Teheran and Trump.

Earlier, the UK’s Keir Starmer and Trump agreed that reopening the Strait of  Hormuz is “essential to resume global shipping”  during a call late on Sunday according to Downing Street

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it expects to face ‘several more weeks of fighting against Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon
