Of that Muthurajawela project
Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has urged the government to halt the mega tourism project, consisting of a golf course, hotels, etc., to be carried out in the Muthurajawela Wetland. He has warned there will be floods in the Gampaha District if the projects get underway.
The question arises as to whether the government has not carried out feasibility studies where all aspects would have been looked into, such as environment, economic, etc. Or, has the project been undertaken according to whims and fancies of politicians, without conducting feasibility studies? It has done so in respect of the Mattala Airport, the Suriyawewa Cricket Stadium and the Uma Oya project.
It, however, needs to be added that the Bishop of Chilaw objected to the construction of the Norochcholai coal-fired power plant, claiming that it would have adverse effects on St. Anne’s Shrine at Talawila – 13 Km away. This objection was looked into by local and foreign experts and assured that there would not be any cause for such a concern. Failing that objection, environmental pollution was brought in and that too was effectively answered. The project was delayed and the country had to face a severe power shortage resulting in six-hour power cuts.
Cardinal Ranjith should be profusely thanked for warning the government in undertaking projects which are harmful to the people and the country. It is hoped the government would look into the objection and keep the people informed, allaying the fears expressed.
