A number of schoolchildren across the country have been affected by heat strokes in recent weeks due to the prevailing high temperature, Consultant Paediatrician at the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Dr. Deepal Perera, says.

Dr. Perera said that despite the high heat a large number of children were seen outdoors engaging in strenuous work due to sports meets, big matches and other sports activities.

Children had to drink a lot more water than they usually did, he said.

“We recommend that people consume natural juices and other liquids that contain minerals,” Dr. Perera said, adding that it was best to hold sporting activities in the morning or in the evening.

Dr. Perera said the elderly and the sick must be frequently attended to and that children should never be left in vehicles unattended.

He also urged people to wear lightweight and light-coloured clothing.
