Nikapotha Chandajothi Thero appointed Udarata Amarapura Mahanayake
The Most Venerable Nikapotha Chandajothi Nayaka Thero has been appointed as the Mahanayake of the Udarata Amarapura Maha Nikaya by the Vinaya Wadin Karaka Sangha Sabha, in recognition of his long-standing service to the Buddhist Sasana, Ven. Dr. Boralesgamuwe Premaratana Thero said in a statement.
It said that a formal state ceremony marking the appointment was held on the 17th at BMICH.
Born in the village of Nikapotha in the Kandapalla Korale of Badulla District, Chandajothi Thero entered the monastic order in 1962. He was ordained under the late Ven. Udubaddawa Ratanajothi Mahanayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of Nikapotha Subhadraramaya, and the late Ven. Ambegoda Gnanananda Thero of Suvishuddhodaya Buddhist Centre, Pamunuwa, Maharagama.
From an early age, he dedicated himself to religious and academic service within the Buddhist Sasana. He received his early education at Thailagoda Sri Saddhananda Pirivena and later studied under the late Ven. Kanaweralle Sri Sudassana Mahanayaka Thero, former head of the Udarata Amarapura Sect.
He subsequently pursued advanced studies at the Pannipitiya Vidyalankara Pirivena and the University of Kelaniya, mastering Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit and Western linguistics. He also excelled in examinations including Prachina Prarambha and Madhyama.
In 1967, together with his teacher, he founded the Sri Gnanananda Buddhist Centre in Madiwela, Kotte, later serving as its Chief Incumbent. Under his guidance, the temple was developed with key religious and educational facilities, including a Buddha shrine, Bodhi tree, stupa, library and residential quarters. The Sri Chandajothi Dhamma School established there has produced many students grounded in Buddhist teachings and values.
The Thero has also contributed significantly to Buddhist literature, authoring works such as Vas Visima ha Kathina Chivara Pujava, Daham Sangarawa, and a directory of Udarata Amarapura Nikaya temples.
He has travelled widely to countries including Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and Tibet to strengthen inter-Buddhist relations and promote the Dhamma internationally.
Senior monks and disciples have described him as a distinguished Sangha leader and humanitarian, praising his wisdom, organisational ability and compassionate leadership.

Namal remanded until Sept. 18 over Airbus deal investigation
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa was yesterday remanded until September 18 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court following his arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in connection with an investigation into the controversial SriLankan Airlines Airbus aircraft transaction.
Rajapaksa appeared before the CIABOC at around 9.15 am yesterday to record a statement after being summoned over the transaction. He was taken into custody following several hours of questioning and subsequently produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
The investigation centres on allegations surrounding the acquisition of six Airbus A330 and eight A350 aircraft by SriLankan Airlines in 2013, in connection with an alleged USD 2 million bribe.
Former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena and his wife, Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake, had previously been named in connection with the alleged bribery.
Chandrasena was arrested on March 12 as part of an investigation launched by the CIABOC under the Anti-Corruption Act and was subsequently released on bail. He was later found dead on May 8 while on bail, with police suspecting that his death was a suicide.
Open warrants have been issued for the arrest of Wijenayake, who is named as the second suspect, and Shamindra Rajapaksa, named as the third suspect, in the case pending before the Fort Magistrate’s Court in connection with the Airbus transaction.
The investigation has also received assistance from Airbus, with a delegation from the company’s parent group in France visiting Sri Lanka during the first week of August. The delegation provided statements and other assistance to the CIABOC as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Rajapaksa’s arrest and remand yesterday mark a further development in the widening investigation into the controversial aircraft deal.
