Navy seizes local multi-day fishing trawler on suspicion of smuggling narcotics

A special operation mounted by the Navy led to the interception of a local multi-day fishing trawler suspected of smuggling narcotics, on the high seas about 400 nautical miles (740km) south of Sri Lanka.

The trawler was escorted to the Galle harbour on Friday evening (14th June)  and a thorough search of the trawler was being conducted by the Navy.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Buddhism, Religious, and Cultural Affairs to provide tax relief on imported dates received as donations or gift for Ramadan.

This year’s Ramadan fasting season is scheduled to begin on 19-02-2026 and end on 21-03-2026.
