Modi, Ranil, Pravind to witness launch of UPI

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth will witness the launch of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, and also RuPay card services in Mauritius today (12) at 1 PM via video conferencing, said a press release issued by the Indian High Commission in Colombo yesterday.

It said India has emerged as a leader in Fintech innovation and Digital Public Infrastructure. The Prime Minister has placed a strong emphasis on sharing our development experiences and innovation with partner countries. Given India’s robust cultural and people-to-people linkages with Sri Lanka and Mauritius, the launch will benefit a wide cross-section of people through a faster and seamless digital transaction experience and enhance digital connectivity between the countries.

The launch will enable availability of UPI settlement services for Indian nationals travelling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius as well as for Mauritian nationals travelling to India. The extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius will enable Mauritian banks to issue cards based on RuPay mechanism in Mauritius and facilitate usage of RuPay Card for settlements both in India and Mauritius.

Amendment of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance No. 3 of 1897

Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance No. 3 of 1897 is the principle law that regulates the prevention of the spread of communicable diseases and the implementation of quarantine measures.

However, at present, it has been observed that the risk of spreading communicable diseases across borders have significantly increased due to  considerable increase in the
international and domestic movement of persons, goods, and services and frequent international travel and trade have led communicable diseases spread rapidly between countries.

Accordingly, although cabinet approval was granted in the 2016 to amend the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance No. 3 of 1897, the relevant amendment bills have not been  presented to Parliament.

Therefore, as per the proposal made by the Minister of Health and Mass Media, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of a Review Committee to study the amendment bill that has been prepared  and propose suitable amendments to meet the current health challenges as well as challenges that may arise in the future, taking into consideration the experience obtained during the epidemic situations that have occurred in the past.
