Mid-East tensions exert withering impact on global stock trading
CSE trading dropped drastically yesterday during the early morning session, as Middle East tensions continued to spawn uncertainty within stock markets world wide, brokers said.
Consequently, the ASPI was down 5.27 percent, or 1250.30, at 22.483.76, while the S&P SL20 was down 5.53 percent, or 366.97, at 6269.00.
“The market was halted due to the S&P SL20 index dropping over 5 percent from the previous close but commenced trading activities in the early part of the session, CSE sources told The Island Financial Review.
Turnover stood at Rs 9.56 billion with eight crossings. Top seven crossings were as follows: HNB, crossed 352,000 shares to the tune of Rs 155 million; its shares traded at Rs 427, ACL Cables 1.5 million shares crossed for Rs 147 million; its shares traded at Rs 98, Chevron Lubricants 550,000 shares crossed for Rs 109 million; its shares traded at Rs 195, Lion Breweries 56,700 shares crossed to the tune of Rs 102 million; its shares sold at Rs 1800, Access Engineering 1.1 million shares crossed for Rs 84.5 million; its shares traded at Rs 77, JKH 3.8 million shares crossed for Rs 80.6 million; its shares traded at Rs 21 and Hayleys 300,000 shares crossed for Rs 70.5 million; its shares sold at Rs 235.
In the retail market companies that mainly contributed to the turnover were; Commercial Bank Rs 658.7 million (3.1 million shares traded), Access Engineering Rs 543 million (7 1 million shares traded), ACL Cables Rs 378 million (3 8 million shares traded), Colombo Dockyard Rs 355 million (2.5 million shares traded), Softlogic Capital Rs 343 million (34 million shares traded), Sampath Bank Rs 327 million (2.1 million shares traded) and Lanka IOC Rs 292 million (1.9 million shares traded). During the day 331.7 million share volumes changed hands in 76632 transactions.
It is said that banking sector counters, especially HNB and Commercial Bank, were very active in the market, while the manufacturing sector, especially JKH and ACL Cables, performed in a significant manner. The financial, construction and petroleum sector counters performed well too.
Yesterday the rupee opened weaker at Rs309.75/310.20 to the US dollar in the spot market, depreciating sharply from Rs 309.20/25 on Friday, dealers said, while bond yields opened higher on Middle East tension, but renewed buying interest kicked in at elevated levels driving recovery.
A bond maturing on 15.12.2028 was quoted at 9.15/20 percent.
A bond maturing on 15.12.2029 was quoted at 9.55/60 percent, up from 9.40/44 percent.
A bond maturing on 15.03.2031 was quoted at 9.75/80 percent, up from 9.65/70 percent.
A bond maturing on 01.10.2032 was quoted at 10.20/22 percent, up from 10.09/10 percent.
A bond maturing on 01.06.2033 was quoted at 10.45/55 percent, up from 10.33/35 percent

SLEIS 2026 to examine Sri Lanka’s energy transition and its implications

Establishment of the New Advisory Committee
To broaden its operational reach and deepen its engagement with the global art market, the George Keyt Foundation has established an Advisory Committee. The newly appointed committee members include:
• Dr Sujatha Meegama is a Senior Lecturer in Buddhist Art History at the Courtauld. She is an acclaimed art historian, author and academic, bringing specialised knowledge in South Asian art history to guide the foundation’s curatorial and educational directives.
