Mathews set to make World Cup comeback

Sri Lanka’s request to the ICC Events Technical Committee to replace injured Matheesha Pathirana with former captain Angelo Mathews in their World Cup squad has been granted.
Pathirana failed to recover from a shoulder injury and the Sri Lankan team management had asked the fast bowler to be replaced by Mathews.
Initially, it was thought that fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera will come in place of Pathirana, but in a bid to address the team’s batting woes, they have opted to go for Mathews.
Mathews wasn’t picked in Sri Lanka’s initial World Cup squad but arrived in India as a travelling reserve last week.
Now that he has been drafted into the squad, Mathews is expected to feature in Sri Lanka’s remaining games of the sport’s showpiece event.
Sri Lanka’s next game is on Thursday against defending champions England and although many expect all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne to be replaced by Mathews in the playing eleven, it could be Dhananjaya de Silva who will be making way for him.
