Malinda Seneviratne elected President of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka

Malinda Seneviratne, former national player and Captain/Manager of the Gold medal winning team at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway was elected uncontested as

President. of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) at the Annual General Meeting on the 31st of May at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.

Indika Anuruddha Niharepola was elected Secretary and Susantha Senadheerawas elected Treasurer.

The new Executive Committee of CFSL:

President – Malinda Seneviratne

Vice Presidents -Dinoo Dharmaratne and E G P I Dharmatilaka (representing the Sri Lanka Schools Chess Association)

Secretary – Indika Anuruddha Niharepola

Treasurer – Susantha Senadheera

Tournament Secretary – Dimuthu Abewardhana

Assistant Secretary – Nishendra Herath

Committee Members: Sameera Gunasinghe, Ashanthi Rajapaksha, Chamika Perera, Jagath Abaynayaka, Navaratnam Nantharupan, Ajith Ranasinghe (nominee of the Sri Lanka Schools Chess Association), Luxman Wijesuriya (Immediate Past President)

All members of the Executive Committee were elected uncontested.

Dinara, Yuhansa advance to quarter-finals at SSC ITF J30 Week 2

Sri Lanka’s promising juniors Dinara de Silva and Yuhansa Peiris booked their places in the quarter-finals of the SSC ITF Junior J30 Circuit 2026 Week 2 tournament with commanding second-round victories at the SSC courts.

‎Top local prospect Dinara de Silva produced a flawless performance to outclass India’s Bawyasri ASR in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 victory. Dinara controlled the match from the outset with aggressive play and did not allow her opponent any opportunity to settle into the contest.

‎Meanwhile, fellow Sri Lankan Yuhansa Peiris also enjoyed a comfortable passage to the last eight, defeating India’s Ilaiyanila Kannan 6-3, 6-0. After a competitive opening set, Yuhansa raised her level significantly in the second set, overwhelming her opponent to seal the win in convincing fashion.

‎The victories ensured strong Sri Lankan representation in the latter stages of the prestigious junior international tournament, with both Dinara and Yuhansa continuing their impressive runs at the SSC ITF Junior J30 Circuit Week 2 competition.

Dharmaraja edge Trinity in thriller as Maliyadeva, Dharmasoka register victories

Dharmaraja College Kandy recorded a thrilling two-run victory over Trinity College according to the DLS method, while Maliyadeva College Kurunegala and Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda also emerged victorious in their respective matches of the Under-17 Division I Inter-School Cricket Tournament played on Wednesday.

‎At Kandy, Dharmaraja piled up an imposing 247 for 5 in 39 overs thanks to three outstanding batting performances. Chanuth Jayasinghaarachchi top-scored with 71 off 66 deliveries, striking 12 fours and a six, while Risith Ambepitiya contributed a steady 66 off 93 balls. Sasith Bandara provided the late acceleration with a blistering 72 from 56 deliveries that included eight fours and two sixes.

‎In reply, Trinity were well placed at 180 for 4 in 29.3 overs with Shenal De Arthur making 60 and Keshan Yougaraj adding 47. However, the match was decided under the DLS method, with Dharmaraja securing a narrow two-run victory.

‎At the Teacher Training Ground in Balapitiya, Dharmasoka College defeated Sri Sumangala College Panadura by three wickets after a disciplined bowling display restricted the visitors to 119 all out in 26.4 overs. Dinuga Thathsilu fought hard with 46 runs, but the combined efforts of Bigun Indumina (2 for 27), Tharusha Nirmal (2 for 35), Thamindu Kaveeshara (2 for 17) and Ushitha Abhilash (2 for 8) kept the total in check.

‎Dharmasoka successfully chased down the target, reaching 120 for 7 in 29.3 overs. Reshitha de Silva led the scoring with 31, while Nimeth Selanga chipped in with 22.

‎At Chilaw, Maliyadeva College recorded a convincing 79-run win over St. Mary’s College. Open batsman Akein Amarajeewa laid the foundation with an excellent knock of 90 runs before the bowlers took charge.

‎Tashen Sarathchandra produced a superb spell of 4 for 13 from 10 overs, including four maidens, while Rahal De Silva supported him brilliantly with figures of 3 for 15 as Maliyadeva completed a dominant victory.

‎In another encounter, Sri Sumangala College Wariyapola defeated Sandalanka Central College by seven wickets. The chase was anchored by an aggressive unbeaten 57 from just 39 balls by Thisara Gimhana, whose innings featured 11 boundaries and a six.

‎With the latest round of matches producing several standout performances the Under-17 Division I tournament continued to gather momentum. (RF)

15th Stafford Motors – Mca G Division T20 League Cricket Tournament

The MCA G division final between Maliban Biscuits and Brandix Apparel which was to be played on 24th May and postponed due to inclement weather will be played at the MCA ground on Friday [05th June] morning. The winners will walk away with the ‘Honda Trophy’.

The third place game between Star Garments and tournament sponsors Stafford Motors will take place at the same venue in the afternoon.
