Lekamge placed sixth at Belt and Road Athletics Championship in China
Thrower Dilhani Lekamge finished sixth in the women’s javelin throw at the Belt and Road World Athletics Bronze lable Continental Tour event in Chongqing, China yesterday.
While Lekamge finished sixth, Aruna Dharshana did not feature in the men’s 200 metres final despite advancing to the final as one of the favourites. Dharshana was also the winner of the men’s 400 metres final which was held on Tuesday.
Lekamge cleared a distance of 53.52 metres in her final attempt to be placed sixth. Her other throws were measured at 50.49m, 53.41m, 52.06m, 51.70m and 52.21m.
Lekamge carried a seasonal best of 54.38 metres to the event in China.
The veteran thrower is the highest ranked female athlete in Sri Lanka in the ‘Road to Paris 24’ Olympic rankings. Her current position (31) in the ranking makes her eligible for the global event in Paris, but maintaining that position untill the qualifying period expires later next month is a must if she is to book her ticket.
