Lanka’s urban population burgeoning
The urban population in Sri Lanka has increased to 44.5 percent, the latest available survey from the National Physical Planning Department has revealed.The previous survey on urbanisation in Sri Lanka was conducted in 2012 and urbanisation stood at 18.2 percent then.
The percentage of urban population has increased to 44.5 percent during the past 10 years.The survey has identified 3,025 Grama Niladhari Divisions as urban areas.
There are 12,773 Grama Niladhari Divisions in the country.According to the survey, Colombo is the District with the highest urban population percentage (96.74).
The survey has also revealed that the percentage of urbanisation in Gampaha district is 76.76, followed by Jaffna district 67.28 percent.The lowest percentage of urban population has been reported from Mullaitivu District; it is 2.84 percent. This survey findings are to be submitted to the Cabinet after receiving approval from the President and all District committees. (RK)
