A street food vendor, arrested by police following a video of a recent incident involving American YouTuber Emeka Iwueze that went viral, was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. He was granted bail yesterday (17).

Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa told The Island that the police had acted on the video though there was no complaint from the victim of the vendor’s apparent crass behaviour. Attorney-at-law Thalduwa said that they felt the need to take action as the street food vendor acted in a threatening and insulting manner.

Video footage of the street food vendor ordering the foreigner out after he declined to buy a small portion of Kottu Roti for Rs.1,900 at a street food stall in Hulftsdorp attracted many public comments.

The Keselwatta Police arrested the suspect for using abusive language towards a foreigner while negotiating the price for a portion of Kottu Roti. The 51-year-old suspect, a resident of Colombo 12, was ordered to be released on cash bail of Rs. 50,000 with a surety of Rs.1 million.
