Keen to entertain… as a solo artiste

The name Nushika Fernando may not ring a bell to many! No, she is not new to the local music scene, but the reason for her obscurity is because she was a part of an outfit for over five years, and she didn’t have the opportunity to display her talents, to her satisfaction.

It was while doing the London A/L, privately, that she teamed up with this outfit and also toured the USA, Australia, Dubai, and the Maldives, multiple times, in addition to performing at many weddings and concerts, in the scene here.

Soon after leaving the band, in March 2022, Nushika toured Dubai, for her maiden solo performance, in June 2022.

And, now, she is a fully-fledged solo artiste, and, over the past few months, she has performed at many events, including Launches, Corporate events, Partner Forums, Toastmaster Installations, and indoor and outdoor concerts, along with many leading artistes and bands.

The plus factor, where Nushika is concerned, is that she has been trained, under Mary Anne David, for several years, as well as Maxi Rosairo, for over three years.

Another interesting fact is that Nushika has sung Bhajans, at a tender age of seven, at several venues, trained under Kokila Vijayaragavan.

Being a versatile artiste, she says her repertoire is made up of pop, rock, reggae, funk, hip-hop, jazz, RnB, soul, disco, and more.

Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey are among her favourites, but her all-time favourites, she says, will always be Jessie J and Christina Aguilera.

A student of St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo 7, Nushika was involved in several inter-school and joint-school events, and has won many Junior and Senior singing competitions at school.

What makes Nushika Fernando extra special is that she was born and brought up in a family of musicians.

Among her immediate family members, connected with music, her father, Shanaka Fernando, was a vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist of the band Blaze, well recognised for strict tempo dance music, in the late ’80s and early ’90s

Nushika is currently working on originals and collaborations.

Her goal in life, she says, is to be a versatile singer, a true performer, who, someday, will take Sri Lankan music to the international stage/platform.
