Karu wants RTI Comm. reactivated
Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, in his capacity as the leader of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ), has called for the reactivation of the Right to Information Commission. Jayasuriya said that the existing vacancies in the Commission should be filled without further delay.
The following is the text of a statement issued by the NMSJ leader: “The public’s right to access information vital to the nation’s well-being and the protection of citizens’ rights was once considered an anti-government act by certain rulers. Due to the hostile stance of some leaders, those who advocated for transparency faced several challenges. A key example is the 14-year delay in enacting the RTI Bill, first introduced as a private member’s motion in 2002, which finally became law in 2016.
Despite these obstacles, the RTI Act No. 12 of 2016 and the RTI Commission have played a significant role in curbing corruption, reducing waste, and addressing various irregularities in the country. It is no secret that the Commission’s efforts have significantly contributed to the information being uncovered through Parliamentary committee investigations.
Given its importance, all parties committed to the nation’s progress must act swiftly to strengthen the RTI Commission, which was established after a long and hard-fought struggle. We, the NMSJ, urge President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and all relevant stakeholders to give this matter their immediate attention.”
Approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted to the preparation of the Appropriation Bill for the financial year of 2027 at their meeting held on 30.06.2026.
Accordingly, clearance of the Attorney General has been given to the Appropriation Bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman.
Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution furnished by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to publish the aforementioned draft bill in the government gazette notification and thereby submit the same to the Parliament for its concurrence.

Cabinet nod to host the 8th Asian Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the 3rd Joint Asian and South-East Asian Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association
The 8th Asian Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the 3rd Joint Asian and South-East Asian Regional Conference of the CPA are planned to be held over three days in Colombo during April/May 2027.
Approximately 90 delegates including speakers, Deputy Speakers, Member of Parliamentarians, and Parliamentary officers representing member countries of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, in the Asian and South-East Asian regions, are expected to participate in these conferences.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the resolution furnished by the Prime Minister of the Parliament of Sri Lanka to host the said conferences considering the opportunities to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy and regional cooperation, as well as to enhance international recognition of the Parliament of Sri Lanka within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
