Karu commends Sajith’s pledge to implement 13th Amendment fully
Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has urged the government to hold a round table conference to explore ways and means of resolving post-war issues.
Referring to SJB leader Sajith Premadasa’s declaration in Kilinochchi regarding his decision to implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution fully, the former Speaker and ex-UNP Deputy Leader requested the government and all political parties, especially Tamil groups to take advantage of the opportunity presented by Premadasa’s assurance.
Jayasuriya, issued a statement in this regard yesterday, in his capacity as Chairman of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ).
Jayasuriya said that former Presidents, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa and incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe as well as the JVP had supported the full implementation of the 13th Amendment.
Urging President Wickremesinghe and the parliament to take tangible measures to build on the SJB leader’s positive stand on 13 Amendment, Jayasuriya warned of dire consequences if they failed to utilise this opportunity.
In an obvious reference to the GTF led initiative, Jayasuriya said that a significant group of Tamil Diaspora, too, backed reconciliation efforts. The ex-Speaker urged all concerned to work together to seek a consensus on the national issue.
