JVP should get more seats, says Basil

Introducing a new Constitution was one of the main tasks before a future SLPP government, SLPP National Organizer, Basil Rajapaksa told the media in Colombo yesterday.

There was a need for a new Constitution that addressed the issues surrounding the electoral system and the powers of the executive, he said.

The 19th amendment to the constitution was extremely problematic, he said. “There is a section that says the number of ministries are limited to 30 but another section says something completely contradictory,” he said.

Rajapaksa said that the SLPP would ensure that the existing commissions were truly independent. To accomplish those tasks, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa needed a two-thirds majority, he said. “Only then can the President introduce policies that are not diluted by other actors,” Rajapaksa said.

“The Opposition must also be strong. I personally would be happy if the JVP-led alliance gets more votes. The Opposition must carry out its duties without becoming a joke,” he said.
