By Saman Indrajith

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday said that Ranil Wickremesinghe would make use of the acting presidential powers to abuse the state apparatus to oppression the people.

“A state of Emergency and a curfew have been declared to suppress people’s rights and enable the ruler to suspend or amend any law and bring about new laws to the whims and fancies of the ruler. These powers are to be exercised against people who demand the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe. As per the latest news President Rajapaksa has not resigned yet but handed over his executive powers to Wickremesinghe. Wickremesingghe and those who support him must realise that the people are asking them to give up power and any attempts to do otherwise will end up in unprecedented crises,” Dissanayake warned. The JVP Leader said the country had reached a critical juncture.

“The President has not yet stepped down. The Acting President is attempting to misuse in a very oppressive manner. This conflict will lead to further crises and we still call on the President and his new Acting President to resign immediately, Dissanayake said.

The JVP leader appealed to the police and the tri-forces to understand the prevailing ground reality in the country and refrain from carrying out illegal orders from the government. “We appeal to the tri-forces and police to listen to people and understand their just demand. We hope that the security forces will be with the people rather than using their weapons to protect a clique hell-bent on clinging on to power. This country is facing the danger of being placed at the mercy of a coterie supporting Wickremesinghe. Do not aim your batons and tear gas at the people,” Dissanayake said. The JVP leader called on all to unite as a single force to fight against oppression being mounted by Acting President Wickremesinghe and to continue the people’s struggle to its desired objective of ending a corrupt regime.
