Justice Ministry begins process of establishing Independent Prosecutor’s Office
The Ministry of Justice and National Integration has announced plans to establish an Independent Prosecutor’s Office, fulfilling a key pledge of the JVP-led NPP government.
Issuing a statement, the Ministry outlined its proposal to form a technical committee as the first step in the process. This committee will be responsible for developing the initial framework for the new office.
According to the Ministry, the committee will include the Attorney General or two representatives from the AG’s Department, the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, a senior judge with expertise in judicial services, and the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) or a representative appointed by the BASL President.
The primary task of the committee will be to draft a concept paper on the establishment of the Independent Prosecutor’s Office. The Ministry also stated that the public and civil society consultations would be conducted to gather feedback before finalizing the structure and mandate of the proposed office.
