Japan and FAO launch $1.33 mn fisheries recovery project in the East
Japan and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the Sri Lankan government, recently launched a USD 1.33 mn initiative to restore fisheries and rebuilding livelihoods in the Eastern Province, following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The project, which will be carried out between June, 2026, and November, 2027, is expected to support more than 1,500 fishers across the districts of Amparai, Batticaloa and Trincomalee, whilst strengthening the resilience of local communities against future climate-related disasters.
The agreement was signed by Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata and FAO Representative for Sri Lanka and the Maldives Vimlendra Sharan at a ceremony held at the Japanese Embassy in Colombo. Sri Lanka’s Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic Resources and Ocean Resources Development, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, was also in attendance.
Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread flooding across large parts of the island earlier this year, with the Eastern Province among the worst-affected regions. The disaster severely disrupted inland fisheries, damaging infrastructure, destroying fish stocks and undermining the livelihoods of thousands of families dependent on reservoir-based fishing.
Floodwaters and emergency releases from reservoirs resulted in the loss of large numbers of fish fingerlings and mature fish, whilst fishing equipment and fisheries infrastructure suffered extensive damage.The resulting disruption to breeding cycles and fish production significantly reduced incomes for fishing communities already facing economic hardship.
Approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted to the preparation of the Appropriation Bill for the financial year of 2027 at their meeting held on 30.06.2026.
Accordingly, clearance of the Attorney General has been given to the Appropriation Bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman.
Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution furnished by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to publish the aforementioned draft bill in the government gazette notification and thereby submit the same to the Parliament for its concurrence.

The 8th Asian Regional Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the 3rd Joint Asian and South-East Asian Regional Conference of the CPA are planned to be held over three days in Colombo during April/May 2027.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the resolution furnished by the Prime Minister of the Parliament of Sri Lanka to host the said conferences considering the opportunities to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy and regional cooperation, as well as to enhance international recognition of the Parliament of Sri Lanka within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
