ISHINI… branching out
Those who are familiar with the local showbiz scene will know that Ishini Fonseka is not someone new to the entertainment industry.
She’s been around for close to three years – originally, doing it on her own, as a solo singer, and then latching up with one of Sri Lanka’s top bands…Mirage.
It was with Mirage that she gained attention and, before long, she was in the spotlight, in a big way. Then came the coronavirus pandemic and the music scene went into reverse gear, the world over, and Sri Lanka was no exception.
With no work coming her way, Ishini spent her time, at home, exercising her vocal chords, and also making sure that she did not miss out on anything new on her Facebook page. And that’s when the idea came her way – to have her own band of young musicians.
“I wanted to work with a group of young musicians so that we could come out with a new format.”
Ishini had a few musician friends, on her Facebook, and she was in constant contact with them, checking out their videos and what they had to offer, by way of entertainment.
Eventually, they decided on a meetup, and that’s when her new band took shape…The Branch.
And, why the name The Branch?
According to Ishini, she though that particular name would be ideal as their aim is to branch out, spreading their energetic and soul-touching music, through the hearts of everyone.
“We are now working hard on creating the kind of music that will go down well with our audience.”
Their next gig will be at the Irish Bar and Grill, at Park Street, Colombo, this Friday, February 5th.
Says Ishini, “We are going to kick off the month of February with a night to remember, with great music and an energetic performance.”
Ishini went on to say that the atmosphere, at the Irish Bar and Grill, is great, adding that with your favourite songs played just for you, you definitely would not want to miss out on an evening of great fun and awesome music.
I’m also told there’s a daily Happy Hour, from 5pm – 7pm., at the Irish Bar and Grill at Park, which would certainly enhance the fun.
Ishini also mentioned that everyone who comes to watch them perform, will have a good time, and, of course, wanting more!
“I always engage with the crowd by talking to them and dancing a bit on stage; my main intention is to keep my audience entertained and that is going to be my goal, through Ishini and The Branch.
“I also need to add that my experience with the legends of Mirage, like band leader Donald, Benjy and Marlon, has made me what I’m today, and I’m so grateful to them.”
Readers could checkout their upcoming gigs by keeping in touch with Ishini and The Branch through their Facebook page and Instagram page – ishiniandthebranch.
