Heavy showers likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts

Showers may occur at several places in the coastal areas of the Southern province during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in most provinces of the island after 2.00 p.m. Heavy showers more than 100mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Winds will be south-westerly or variable and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 40 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar can be moderate at times but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR 13 APRIL 2026
Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 13 April 2026 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at some places in the  Western, Southern and Eastern provinces in the morning and  at most places of the island  in the afternoon. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa,  Central, Southern and North-western provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
