Graduands snub Colombo University Chancellor
Some academics and graduands of the Colombo University boycotted their convocation during the past three days at the BMICH, Colombo in protest against the appointment of Ven Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera as the Chancellor of the University.
Some graduands abstained from obtaining their degree certificates from Ven Ananda Thera by walking past him at the graduation ceremony.
When the names of graduands were called to accept their degree certificates they went to the stage but just walked past Ananda Thera without receiving their certificates.
Videos of graduands walking past the chancellor at the convocation have gone viral on social media platforms.
There were some who attended the ceremony, wearing black arm-bands.
The Faculty of Management and Finance Teachers’ Association (FMFTA) had said in a statement earlier that it had decided to boycott the graduation ceremony of the University of Colombo.
FMFTA said it would not attend the convocation as a mark of protest against the controversial appointment.
