Govt. lifts import restrictions on 300 to 400 items from next week
State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya yesterday announced the easing of import restrictions on approximately 300 to 400 items from next week. This decision is a direct result of the improved availability of US dollars, he said.
During a media conference, in Ruwanwella, Minister Siyambalapitiya explained that the initial import restrictions were imposed due to the shortage of foreign exchange in April of 2022. The significant depreciation of the Sri Lankan Rupee further necessitated these measures, he said.
Minister Siyambalapitiya emphasised that protecting and supporting local industries remains a priority for the Government. Therefore, import restrictions on goods produced domestically will not be lifted at this time. Last year, the Government implemented a ban on importing 1,465 items.
