GMOA likens increasing number of educated youth leaving country to killing of 60,000 patriotic youth in 88-89
The increasing number of educated youth leaving the countr would have the same adverse impact on the country as the deaths of 60,000 educated patriotic youth in 88-89, Secretary of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA), Dr. Senal Fernando said yesterday.
“Because of the carnage of the late 80s, a bunch of corrupt politicians managed to rule the country for decades and we are suffering the consequences. Again, a large number of young people, who were initially optimistic about the country, are leaving in droves. This will ensure the perpetuation of of the rotten politial culture,” he said. For a country to develop, it needed smart leaders and officials, who could implement complex systems and procedures, Dr. Fernando said.
“Sri Lanka has rich physical and human resources. However, powerful nations have managed to negate these advantages in the past. In recent years, we have seen powerful nations destabilising countries through civil unrest and through encouraging military dictatorships. Because of the incompetence and arrogance of Sri Lanka’s leadership, we are now facing hitherto unseen political, economic and social crisis. Social media is being used to exploit the emotions of the people,” he said.
Dr. Fernando said that due to the mismanagement of the current leadership, even successful individuals who had tried to make the country a better place facing previous challenges, are leaving the country.Dr. Fernando said that the current leadership has joined certain unscrupulous elements to undermine individuals who are critical of the government.
