Geneva issue: NPC too, believes origins of conflict should be investigated

The National Peace Council (NPC) has said that the origins of the Sri Lanka conflict should be investigated. Executive Director of the NPC Dr. Jehan Perera said so in response to The Island query. We raised the issue in the wake of the Global Tamil Forum and four international human rights organisations calling for a strong resolution reflecting the UN
High Commissioner’s latest report on Sri Lanka. The Island asked Dr. Perera whether he felt that the proposed Truth Seeking Mechanism should inquire into the origins of the conflict though the UNHRC report did not make any reference to India’s accountability in spite of New Delhi sponsoring terrorism in Sri Lanka at the inception of the violent conflict in the early 80s.
Dr. Perera said: A Truth Commission will seek the truth of what happened. The purpose is to have one narrative where we now have multiple narratives. The idea is to listen to all parties and give conclusions and recommendations. (SF)
