Gas stations ordered to reserve fuel for vehicles engaged in essential services

Energy Minister Gamini Lokuge yesterday (25) told journalists that all gas stations had been directed to reserve fuel for vehicles engaged in essential services.
The Minister said that there had been complaints that vehicles engaged in medical services, fuel transport, etc., had been stranded near gas stations due to fuel shortages. “This has an adverse effect on all aspects of society”, he said.
Therefore, he had directed fuel stations to keep a stock of fuel for vehicles engaged in essential services, the Minister said.
Lokuge urged those involved in essential services to contact gas stations prior to sending in vehicles.
He said that Sri Lanka had adequate stocks of petrol. However, most vehicles engaged in essential services ran on diesel, he said.
“20,000 tonnes of diesel is being unloaded from a ship that arrived from Singapore. Another 30,000 tonnes of diesel will arrive in Sri Lanka next Monday (28)”, the Minister said.
