Four trawlers poaching in Sri Lanka waters held by Navy

The Sri Lanka Navy conducted special operations to chase away Indian trawlers poaching in Sri Lankan waters on Wednesday (06) evening which led to the seizure of 04 Indian trawlers and 21 Indian fishermen that continued to remain in Sri Lankan waters off Mannar and off Kovilan, Kankasanthurei.
One trawler and 8 fishermen were apprehended while poaching in Sri Lankan waters off Mannar and three trawlers and 13 fishermen were apprehended while poaching off Kovilan, Kankasanthurai.
The Navy conducts regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices by foreign fishing trawlers, taking into account the consequences of these practices on the livelihood of local fishermen and marine resources of the country.
Including the trawlers and fishermen held in this operation, the Sri Lanka Navy has seized 31 Indian trawlers poaching in Sri Lanka waters and apprehended 195 Indian fishermen in 2023.
