FIFA appoints Sri Lanka football chief to Grassroots and Amateur Football Committee
The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) has announced that it’s President, Jaswar Umar has been appointed to the Committee for Grassroots and Amateur Football of the World governing body FIFA.
This prestigious appointment by FIFA comes at a time when Sri Lankan Football is experiencing rapid growth under the visionary leadership of Umar. His strategic and bold approach has transformed the landscape of Sri Lankan football, setting new benchmarks in professionalism, governance, and performance.
His relentless focus on professionalizing the national team and elite football structure has positioned Sri Lanka as a rising force in the South Asian region. His modern management style and forward-thinking policies have brought renewed energy and credibility to the game, earning international recognition.
Sri Lanka’s national football team has shown significant improvement and remains the only South Asian nation still in contention for Asian Cup qualification, a testament to the progress achieved through structured reforms and professional planning.
With his new role in FIFA, Umar will now contribute his experience and expertise to uplift grassroots and amateur football on a global scale. LPL 2026 Opening Game between Jaffna and Galle
The inaugural game of the Lanka Premier League 2026 will be played between the Jaffna and Galle teams, who emerged as the Champions and Runners-up respectively in the 2024 season.
The opening game is scheduled to be played on 17th July at the SSC Grounds, commencing at 7.30 p.m.
Prior to the start of the tournament opener, a spectacular opening ceremony will be held at the SSC Grounds in Colombo.
The Lanka Premier League 2026 will be played from 17th July to 8th August across four venues: SSC, Colombo; RDICS, Dambulla; PICS, Pallekele; and RPICS, Colombo.
The tournament is conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the owner of the LPL, in partnership with The IPG Group, the event rights holder.
