Seventeen persons, including children were hospitalisd following the incident.

Trincomalee Police said that about 20 children had been on the ferry at the time of the accident.

Police and security forces moved in to prevent an outbreak of violence as some people gathered at the Kinniya hospital, where they demanded the immediate release of the bodies of the victims without them being subject to post mortem examinations.

Crowds attacked Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP M. S. Thowfeek’s residence in Kinniya. They accused the government of negligence.
