Fashion for freedom…

Applause all round for a successful show

It was, indeed, a most welcome change to see a fashion show being done…differently.

Fashion shows are generally associated with the usual glitter and glamour, with models strutting the catwalk and displaying various outfits…some eye catching and, at times, some outfits looking rather ridiculous!

Perhaps that’s what fashion is all about.

A fashion show, held recently, was done for a very particular cause…and a good one, indeed.

A group of lawyers have teamed up to help women in prison, for offences not considered major – either to get them out of prison or attend to the needs of their kids at home.

‘Fashion for Freedom’ was their first major effort where 34 models, males and females from the lawyers’ fraternity, stepped on the ramp to display the outfits of 12 designers.

There was a large crowd present, on the 7th of October, at the Galle Face Hotel, to take in this scene, and they were all impressed with the happenings on the catwalk.

The show was directed by the well known Chulpadmendra (Chula) Kumarapathirana, a big name in the modelling and fashion scene, and also featured three artistes to keep the guests entertained, musically.

According to Chula, ‘Fashion for Freedom’ will be an annual event and their charity is called Amour (love in French).

Chulpadmendra, by the way, has been appointed National Director in Sri Lanka for Man of the Globe International Pageant.
