Fairly heavy showers are likely at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 21 June 2024 by the Department of Meteorology

Showers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.  Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts in the evening or night.

Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle and from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu and up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be rough at times while the sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle and from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu can be fairly rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are requested to be attentive in this regard

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Northern and North-central provinces during the morning.

Showers may occur in the coastal areas of  the Western and Southern provinces and in Puttalam, Mannar, Jaffna and Ampara districts in the morning  while  showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy rainfall of above 75 mm are likely at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-central, Southern and Eastern provinces.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
