Fairly heavy rainfall likely in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kaluthara, Galle and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 16 March 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

The atmospheric conditions are getting favorable for afternoon thundershowers in most parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Central, North-western and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Mannar districts during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75mm are likely at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Kaluthra, Galle and Nuwara-Eliya districts. A few showers may occur in the coastal areas of the Eastern province.

Winds will be easterly to south-easterly and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the early hours of the morning.

A few showers may occur in coastal areas of the Western province and in Galle and Matara districts in the morning While showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the  Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Monaragala districts after 1.00 p.m.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Please be aware that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, North-western, Northern and North-central provinces and in Monaragala district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
