Fair weather will prevail over most parts of the Island

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 20 August 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Except for a few showers in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, mainly fair weather will prevail over most parts of the Island.

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be (25-35) kmph. Fairly strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times in western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts. Wind speed may increase up to (45-55) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai and Mannar.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil and Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar can be rough at times.

Showers expected in the Western, Norrh-western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya Districts.

Showers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya Districts. Fairly heavy showers  above 50 mm are likely at some places in Galle, Matara, Kaluthara and Rathnapura districts.

Several spells of showers will occur in the North-western province.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in Mullaittivu and Polonnaruwa districts after 1.00 p.m.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
