Elephant House and Cleantech launch a Recyclable Material Recovery Facility

Elephant House together with Cleantech, recently partnered to operate another Material Recovery Facility (MRF) ” to further promote recycling and better plastic waste management practices across the country.

Located in Western Province, this recyclable Plastic Collection Centre is equipped with dedicated transport and service personnel to collect post-consumption recyclable plastic from collection points. The Centre will also have machinery investments to transform the collected plastic into value added plastic waste to supply to the recyclers in the country.

Commenting on the launch of the Centre, John Keells Group Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer Consumer Foods Industry Nelindra Fernando, said, “In today’s world we need to focus on sustainable projects that will benefit society and the environment. Through this project, we aim to promote good practices for our consumers while providing a feasible solution. Together with Gunadamin Elephant House, partnering with Cleantech, we hope to provide our consumers a valuable service and reduce the plastic pollution.”

“Investing in a MRF to collect recyclable plastic collection, a project funded by Ceylon Cold Stores PLC is a joint effort to bring together key stakeholders in our shared vision to reduce plastic pollution in Sri Lanka. Collectors of recyclable plastic waste play an integral role in a circular economy and need to be supported to expand their infrastructure, capacity and reach,” commented Kasun Karunanayake – Head of Circular Economy Services Cleantech Pvt Ltd. “We are delighted to partner with Elephant House in this journey” he further added.

Gunadamin Elephant House is the CSR brand of Elephant House that encapsulates all initiatives that are carried out primarily for the greater good of the society. This project is a part of Waste Management pillar which, collectively with the two other pillars of Community and Sustainable Sourcing makes up the whole of Gunadamin Elephant House.

ComBank secures Global Finance Asia-Pacific regional award for Circular Economy Commitment

The Commercial Bank of Ceylon has been named the Asia Pacific regional winner of the Circular Economy Commitment award at the sixth annual Sustainable Finance Awards presented by Global Finance, securing a significant third-party endorsement of the Bank’s commitment to sustainable and responsible banking.

The award recognises leadership in advancing financing initiatives that promote the reuse and regeneration of materials and resources, thereby supporting production models that are environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient. Among the other regional recipients of the Circular Economy Commitment award this year are Scotiabank for North America and VUB for Central and Eastern Europe.

Kapila Hettihamu, Chief Risk Officer at Commercial Bank, accepted the award on behalf of the Bank at the presentation ceremony held recently at Landing 42 in London.

Global Finance announced the winners of its Sustainable Finance Awards programme for 2025, honouring global, regional and local leadership in funding initiatives designed to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The PDU Unit of IIT–PDU successfully held a remarkable Cambridge Award Ceremony on 4th April 2026, celebrating academic excellence and student achievement.

The PDU Unit of IIT–PDU offers Cambridge English programmes from A1 to C2 levels and serves as an authorized Linguaskill examination centre, supporting students in achieving globally recognized English language qualifications.

The event recognized students of the Cambridge Linguaskill English Programme for their dedication and progress, while also honouring those who successfully completed the Linguaskill examination. The programme, which spans from A1 to C1 levels, awarded certificates to all students based on their performance, recognizing their commitment to improving their English language proficiency.
