Elegance in the big fashion world

Published

on

Elegance is surely a thing of beauty, but what does it mean to the world of fashion. Is it in the way you dress, the way you look, walk and move? Or, is it the way you wear your attitude and your perfume? What does elegance mean to the world of fashion?

Elegance, surely, is a thing of beauty. It defines the beauty of simplicity with a touch of style and neatness and more. According to dictionary, elegance is all about the “quality of being graceful and stylish in appearance and manner; the quality of being pleasingly ingenious and simple”.

“Elegance is usually confused with superficiality, fashion, lack of depth. This is a serious mistake: human beings need to have elegance in their actions and in their posture because this word is synonymous with good taste, amiability, equilibrium and harmony,” says Paulo Coelho.

And the world has seen the evolution of elegance in the beauty and fashion industry, each to his or her own. And there are several interesting takes as the mind of gentleness and creativity unfolds to the world with boldness and honesty.

Well, let’s take a look at the views of big names in the fashion world. What elegance means to them.

Coco Chanel: Elegance does not consist in putting on a new dress… Simplicity is the key note of all true elegance.

Yves Saint Laurent: We must never confuse elegance with snoberry.

Donatella Versace: Elegance is always in style for men. There are different kinds of elegance. It can be silk, it can be a T-shirt.

Giorgio Armani: Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered.

Christian Dior: Nothing is more elegant than a black skirt and sweater worn with sparkling multi-stoned necklace.

Kareena Kapoor Khan: It’s unarguable that the right shoes can really add elegance to an outfit and to the person who’s wearing them.

Audrey Hepburn: Elegance is the only beauty that never fades.

Karl Lagerfeld: Elegance has nothing to do with fashion.

Valentino Garavani: Elegance is the balance between proportion, emotion and surprise.

Alice Temperly: I think fashion can always date, but I think if a woman has elegance she does not date.

While, we can keep adding to the list, the quotes inspire and open up a world of different perspectives on elegance, a beautiful word. Anything understated and delicate is elegant. On the other hand, anything too bold or showy is NOT elegant. They are the opposite. For example, you can barely see bold colours or fancy clothes in elegant style.

It is similar to modest, classy, feminine, minimalist, somtimes vintage style and that’s why they have common fashion items such as solid maxi dress, pearl jewelry, and so on.

Traditionally, clothes with laces or ruffles are elegant. However, clothes with simple yet feminine designs are more accepted by modern people because of the influence of minimalism (This is my personal opinion). In other words, an A-line dress without any special design(laces, ruffles, or whatever) can still look elegant as well.

What is Chic Elegant Style

Fashion is a powerful tool that allows us to express ourselves and showcase our own unique personality styles. Having your own fashion aesthetic can help feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. The Chic Elegant Style is a personal favourite of mine. Typically, it’s associated with luxury and simplicity. It’s classic, timeless, and easy to wear, making it perfect for those who want to add confidence and sophistication to their everyday wardrobe Wearing a black is always chic and elegant outfit idea, whether it’s dressed up or dressed down. This is because black is a timeless and classic colour that exudes sophistication and luxury. The monochrome aspect of the look adds a sleek and streamlined effect, making the outfit look polished and put together.

White is a classic and timeless colour that exudes purity and freshness. The monochrome aspect of the look makes you look instantly polished, without much thought. Additionally, white is a versatile colour that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion, making it a great choice for any event, and it can be combined with other colours to create different looks.

Shades of One Colour

Wearing shades of one colour is a great way to achieve a put together look, regardless of whether you’re dressing up or down. It creates a sense of unity in an outfit, making it appear more visually appealing and well thought out. Also, it allows you to play around with different textures and patterns while still looking cohesive. Try wearing shades of brown from dark to light, and add different textures as well. This will create a unique and timeless look.

Long Coats with Slim Pants

Creating shapes in your outfit can be difficult, but there are a few tips and tricks. Try wearing slim pants with a long, straight coat. The slim pants and long coat combination elongates the body, creating a flattering and sophisticated look. Also, this combination gives off a modern and elegant appearance, making it a timeless choice that can be worn from work to date night, and more.

Accentuate Your Look Without Overwhelming

Wearing minimal jewellry is important for a chic and elegant style as it allows your clothing and overall look to be the focal point, rather than overwhelming it with too many accessories. Opting for simple, classic pieces such as a pair of pearl earrings or a delicate bracelet can add just the right amount of accentuation to your look without detracting from the overall aesthetic. Additionally, less is more when it comes to accessorizing in a chic and elegant style. If you love Audrey Hepburn’s style, go for a simple cat eye sunglasses for a chic accessory.

Neutral Makeup is Timeless

Wearing neutral makeup is another great way to maintain an elegant look. Neutral makeup is timeless and won’t overpower your overall look. By choosing shades that complement your skin tone without overwhelming it, you achieve a clean and classy aesthetic. Remember, makeup should enhance your natural beauty rather than steal the spotlight.

A Soft Red Lip

It is important to stick to neutral makeup when dressing chic and elegant as it allows your natural beauty to shine through and complements the overall look. A light red lip adds a pop of colour without overwhelming the outfit. Opting for neutral makeup and a simple lip colour allows your clothing and accessories to take center stage.

Warm Shades

Wearing warm shades of makeup, such as neutral tones, helps to create a natural and sophisticated look. Opting for a soft, warm-toned eye shadow and a light nude lip can add a touch of elegance to any outfit. Sticking to neutral warm shades will keep your makeup looking chic and timeless.

Wearing black and white is a timeless combination that exudes elegance and sophistication. Adding a pattern like stripes to the mix adds dimension and visual interest to the look, making it stand out and look more dynamic. This is an easy way to elevate your outfit and make a statement.

Elegant Dress Code?

If you want to dress classy and elegant, choose clothes and accessories that are both stylish and classic. The style is characterized by elegant, refined pieces in neutral colours with simple, clean lines. For example, a chic black dress, button down shirt, or pencil skirt are all timeless pieces for a classic wardrobe. This is typically made up of high-quality, well-made clothes that won’t look dated in a few years.

Charming Anudi Gunasekara (25y) is the reigning Miss World Sri Lanka 2024/25. Hailing from Anuradhapura where she studied at Central College, Anuradhapura, she is a graduate from the University of Kelaniya with a Second Upper BA (Hons) degree in International Studies.

She also holds a Diploma in International Relations from the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS)

An Honorary Member of Rotary International 3220, Anudi is the Founder of Saheli, a non-profit organization to combat period poverty in Sri Lanka.

She represents Sri Lanka at the Miss World grand finale in India in May this year.

Begun in 1951, the Miss World pageant is the world’s oldest beauty pageant. In 1972, Miss World became the first major international pageant to feature a dedicated charity program, “Beauty with a Purpose,” which has since raised millions of dollars for causes such as education, disaster relief, and child healthcare.

Excerpt of interview with this ethereal beauty.

We can see a glow in your face and it looks like you are excited to be part of the Miss World Contest?

Absolutely! Competing in Miss World has always been a dream of mine. Wearing the Sri Lankan sash with pride and representing my country on such a prestigious stage is truly a dream come true. I’m incredibly excited for the main competition!

What made you choose your journey in the world of beauty pageants?

I’ve been modelling since I was 19, and Miss World was always a milestone I aspired to achieve. It wasn’t an overnight decision but rather something I’ve been preparing for over the years. What truly drew me to Miss World is its purpose beyond physical beauty, it made me realize that this is my calling.

Did your parents appreciate your choice of entering into pageantry. If no how did you convinced them?

They have always been incredibly understanding and supportive. As the eldest among my siblings, I grew up as an independent child, and that has built a strong sense of trust. They believe in me and know that I can handle whatever comes my way.

You are not only representing Sri Lanka, but the entire world which also adds responsibilities on your shoulders. One such responsibility will be your association with humanity. Tell us how you will deal?

As Miss Sri Lanka and a participant in Miss World, I recognize that my role extends beyond representing my country, it is also about embracing the responsibility of being a global advocate for humanity.

One of the most effective ways to uphold this responsibility is by using my platform to address pressing social issues, particularly those affecting marginalized women. Through my Beauty with a Purpose project, I have already committed to tackling period poverty in Sri Lanka by raising awareness, improving access to sanitary products, and advocating for policy changes. However, the issue of menstrual equity is not confined to one country; it is a global concern that affects millions of women.

Whether it is period poverty, gender inequality, or access to education, my approach will always be rooted in compassion, action, and sustainable solutions.

Who would be your role model from Miss World pageantry?

Manushi Chhillar was the Miss World who truly inspired me to pursue this journey. Her story and purpose resonated with me, reinforcing my desire to be part of Miss World.

Could you walk as through your prep routine diet, fitness, personality training etc. What will you do if you win the title?

The Miss World Sri Lanka team and I work tirelessly to ensure that I represent myself in the best way possible. Fitness has been a key focus as I prepare for the sports and fitness segment, and while I’m mindful of my diet, I make sure not to restrict my body to the point of discomfort. Balance is important. Additionally, I undergo daily training to refine my personality and overall presentation, ensuring I bring my best self to the competition.

What is beauty according to you and how do you drive purpose in beauty?

To me, beauty is not just about appearance, it is a reflection of one’s character, values, and the impact they create in the world. True beauty lies in kindness, resilience, and the ability to uplift others. I drive purpose in beauty by ensuring that my voice, actions, and platform contribute to meaningful change. As Miss Sri Lanka, I have used my role to advocate for menstrual equity through my Beauty with a Purpose project, addressing period poverty and empowering women with knowledge and resources. Beauty becomes purposeful when it is used as a force for good, when it inspires confidence, creates opportunities, and fosters a sense of belonging.

There are many who debate whether beauty pageants are still relevant or not, what is your stand on this?

Beauty pageants, particularly Miss World, remains highly relevant because they have evolved beyond physical appearance to become platforms for advocacy, empowerment, and social change. When done right, pageants are not just about crowns and titles, they are about purpose, passion, and making a difference. That is why I stand firmly in support of their continued relevance.

Lastly your message for all those aspiring girls who wants to win a beauty pageant?

Don’t approach it as a race, but see it as an opportunity for personal growth and transformation. You don’t need to win a title to make a meaningful impact on society. What truly makes you a queen isn’t the crown you wear, but how you treat others and the positive changes you bring to the world.
