Spill gates of Kukuleganga and Laxapana had been opened and people living downstream had to remain vigilant, Director General of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Sudantha Ranasinghe told journalists in Colombo on Monday (04.)

The retired Major General said that Gin, Kalu and Walawe rivers are reaching flood levels and urged people living near these rivers to take care of themselves.

“Floods are dangerous. A lot of people are now more interested in making social media posts on floods than taking basic precautions. Beware of your surroundings and be vigilant,” he said.

Ranasinghe added that while there had been heavy rains in some areas droughts are plaguing other parts of the country. “Cattle herders at Wattamadu are said to be facing severe water shortages.”
