A team of local and international experts supports farmers throughout the cultivation cycle

In response to the increasing threats of climate change on agriculture, DIMO Agribusinesses, the agricultural arm of DIMO, has introduced a range of advanced protected house solutions through its DIMO Agritech Unit. These innovations are designed to promote SMART farming in Sri Lanka and address long-standing challenges such as inadequate crop maintenance, poor technological adoption, and lack of expert guidance.

Despite the widespread introduction of protected cultivation structures in recent years, Sri Lanka has struggled to meet agricultural productivity targets. DIMO Agritech aims to close this gap by offering climate-resilient solutions and comprehensive advisory services tailored to local conditions.

Chief Operating Officer of DIMO Agribusinesses, Priyanga Dematawa, emphasised the need for crop-specific responses to climate challenges. He noted that DIMO has introduced modern protected houses with shield curtains, fans, and advanced drip irrigation systems, specifically designed for lowland wet and dry zones. These houses optimise air circulation and temperature control, making them ideal for cultivating high-value crops like bell peppers, salad cucumbers, and tomatoes.

For upland and intermediate zones, DIMO offers protected house models equipped with insect-resistant netting, natural ventilation, and optional cooling systems. These structures also come in two roof designs to suit different microclimatic needs.

Beyond infrastructure, DIMO Agritech provides a full suite of inputs and support services, including water-soluble fertilizers, seeds, planting materials, pest management solutions, and technical guidance. Ground covers are also used to improve hygiene, drainage, and weed control within the cultivation space.

A team of local and international experts supports farmers throughout the cultivation cycle, helping to ensure success from installation to harvest. According to Dematawa, investing in protected houses of at least 2,000 square feet is ideal, with larger structures of 4,000 square feet offering significant commercial returns within just 2–3 years. These efforts reflect DIMO’s commitment to empowering Sri Lankan farmers with innovative, climate-smart solutions for sustainable agriculture.
