Country’s top javelin throwers including national record holders Sumeda Ranasinghe and Dilhani Lekamge were scheduled to leave for South Korea yesterday to compete in the Asian Throwing Championships which will be held on June 14 and 15 in Mokpo.

The championship will be crucial for Lekamge who is the leading contender in the women’s category to earn an Olympic berth. Currently she is ranked 30th in the ‘Road to Paris 2024’ rankings. She has to maintain a position within the top 32 rankings at the end of this month to earn her ticket to Olympics.

It is the first tour for Diana Harshani who has a personal best of 53.88 from 2022. She has remained under the shadow of Lekamge at national level and will be eager to excell at her first international competition.

Olympian Ranasinghe is joined by Rumesh Tharanga to compete in the men’s category. Tharanga’s coach Tony Prasanna will accompany as the coach while Sameera Perera, the incumbent recorder of Sri Lanka Athletics is the manager.
