Sri Lanka must appoint a committee to investigate how many of its citizens have joined the war between Russia and Ukraine and to determine what course of action needs to be taken about the Sri Lankan men and women fighting for both countries, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Dayasiri Jayasekera told Parliament yesterday (26).

“A large number of Sri Lankans have now joined the war between Russia and Ukraine. They have joined mercenary armies, and the Russian government is not involved in the recruitment and the Russian state has no responsibility over this.”

MP Jayasekera said that certain organized groups are luring Sri Lankans, who are struggling financially, to travel to Russia and Ukraine and work as camp helpers.

“However, they are paid a small salary. Then they are given a chance to go to the frontline and are offered a salary of about 1.5 million rupees. The Sri Lankan government must appoint a committee and look into this issue,” he said.
