D.S. Senanayake earn hard fought 29-20 win over Wesley

A D.S. Senanayake College player makes determined run in the team’s under 19 inter school rugby tournament match against Wesley played in Colombo with the former winning 29-20.

D.S. Senanayake College produced a remarkable show of forwards and three quarter rugby to beat Wesley College 29-20 in an under 19 fifteen a side inter-school league rugby tournament match played at Royal Sports Complex yesterday (July 2).

The winners were pushed all the way to the very end by Wesley, who came back strongly in the second half to earn as many as seventeen points. But D.S. Senayanake held their nerves to produce the match winning try under the posts. The winners led 12-3 at half time.

Wesley’s forwards looked like producing a perfect come from behind win with their steamrolling forwards who once earned a try off a rolling maul; pushing their opponents as much as fifty metres to the try line. But their efforts weren’t good enough to stop the D.S Senanayake from posting a win.

Royal College proved too good for yet another week knocking the day lights out of promising Vidyartha College Kandy 47-3 in an inter-school under 19 league rugby tournament match at Royal Sports Complex in Colombo on Saturday. Last week they ran in seven tries against Science College. On Saturday they managed the same feat.

The winners ran down seven tries out of which six were converted. Charana Perera touched down twice while the other try scorers for the winners were T. Gamage, T. Samarakoon, C. Senewiratne, Disas Pathirana and A. Marikar. Three kickers were employed by Royal in this game.

S. Thomas’ College managed to pull off a hard fought 28-17 win against visiting Kingswood at Mount Lavinia on Saturday. The Thomians lost a player during the first half due to him being shown two yellow cards. Despite being down to 14 men and to 13 during the latter stages of the second half due to another yellow card the Thomians dominated the game never allowed the Kingswodians to make use of the less players on the field and pull off the game. The winners led 14-10 at half time.

The Isipatana vs St. Joseph’s game played on Friday was played at a fast furious pace. But Isipatana prevailed over their opponents with a 28 points to 18 win in their match played at Longden Place. The winners ran down four tries as against two by Joes.

Also on Saturday St. Peter’s ran out worthy winners against Dharmaraja with a smashing 34-7 at Bogambara. Zahira produced another stellar performance in the third week on school rugby when they beat Science 24-8 at Maradana. The week before that Zahira humbled Dharmaraja at Bogambara. Zahira are showing that they earned well deserve promotion to Division 1 Segment 1 rugby this year.
