The Customs Department has cleared 75,000 MT of imported rice by 29 Dec., following the government’s decision to allow rice imports without permits.

Customs Media Spokesperson and Additional Director General, Seevali Arukgoda, said the stock of imported rice included 32,000 MT of Samba rice and 43,000 MT of Nadu.

The government allowed rice to be imported without permits to address a shortage of rice.

The government has extended the deadline for rice imports until 10 January.
