A large number of Municipal health minor employees yesterday did not volunteer to receive the Astrazeneca vaccine against COVID-19 as they were required to cut down their liquor and tobacco consumption for three days after inoculation.

When the vaccination of frontline health workers including garbage collectors commenced yesterday at the A.H.M. Fowzie Maternity and Children Unit in Colombo 13, most of the workers present were after liquor.

Those who had already consumed liquor turned back and left the premises after health authorities informed them that vaccine might have adverse side-effects on them.

Arrangements had been made to inject the vaccine to 550 municipal minor employees, health authorities said, declining to state the actual number of workers who got the jab.
